“Parisian designer Philippe Starck once claimed in a radio interview that when he arrives in a new place he has not been to before, the first thing he does is go for a walk near his hotel, pick up a full dustbin, carry it into his room, empty it on the bed, and go through its contents in order to learn about the people, their place, and the culture. For Starck’s Berlin colleague, Alexandra Martini, the form of the container is enough. Martini photographed public dustbins in thirty countries and on every continent in order to capture all these ‘little differences’. . . .
